| “Steel trading competence since 1921“: Steinweden Stahl celebrates its 90th anniversary
Frankfurt am Main, 1st of October 2011. Steinweden Stahl - since 1921 successful in the Steel branch - celebrates its 90th anniversary. On the 1st of October 1921 founded Walter Steinweden his Company in the City of Leipzig. At this time he was the youngest steel wholesaler in Germany, aged 21 and still a student. After his Diploma he visited in the mid-20ies the “big three” U.S. car manufacturers in Detroit and recognized, that speed and flexibility in the supply chain are important factors for a successful marketing and sales service. In consequence he decided to keep a wide product range directly in stock to cover urgent needs of the growing amount of customers in the Leipzig area. Due to the innovative business model the company could grow quite fast and survived the “black Friday” and the depression at the end of the 1920ies. As a reliable supplier for machinery-manufacturers the company was quite soon well known as a premium wholesaler for bright steel and cold drawn steel. Transportation and logistics could be organized by own trucks or by train, so that material could be delivered to customers throughout Germany and abroad as well. The company had in the end of the 1930ies four warehouses to keep the broad product range in stock and managed it to keep up its operations throughout the war with a limited staff. After 1945 the business had to be organized under the new conditions of a more and more divided country. In 1952 the new SED regime in the GDR decided to socialize all private industries – Steinweden Stahl as well. Because of this, Walter Steinweden was forced to emigrate with his family to western Germany and to start his business in the city of Frankfurt again “from zero”: all materials and machinery in stock had to be left behind in the GDR. Due to the support of loyal manufacturers in Western Germany was the new beginning in Frankfurt a success and Walter Steinweden able to erect new own warehousing and administrative facilities in 1966. Today – 59 years after the relaunch in Frankfurt - about 5.000 products are kept in stock at the facilities of Steinweden Stahl. The warehouse has today about 2.000 square metres with materials up to 500 mm diameter and 7.000 mm of length for direct dispatch in stock. Overall about 1,200 t high quality steel. This USP of Steinweden Stahl has not changed since the 1920ies and has been rewarded with loyal customers out of many different industries. In addition offers Steinweden Stahl today local delivery services in the Rhein-Main area with it’s own Mercedes Benz Atego Trucks as well as cutting services within short of time. A total of four modern automated Amada band sawing machines offer cutting services at high volumes for all needs and are a clearly visible sign for the customer orientated service portfolio of Steinweden Stahl. About 14 employees are today responsible for reliable services in the warehouse, sales and backoffice. The company is still independent and owned by Wolfgang and Roland Steinweden as the second generation of the family within the steel business. |
