Increasing production costs in the steel branch
Frankfurt am Main, 15th of September 2008. Steel branch hit by increasing prices for raw-materials and energy. The latest edition of the magazine “stahl markt” shows in an interview with Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff, President of the German “Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl” the main factors behind the rapidly increasing steel prices. According to Kerkhoff rised the price for iron ore by 87 % compared to last years prices. In addition is the price for coal – relevant for the steel processing - actually three times higher than 2007. Material prices rised in general very quickly – with enormous effects on the overall costs: since December 2007 increased the price for scrap metal by 85 %, the price for tin about 50 % and the price for vanadium by 100 %. Last but not least costs for transportation rised too. Other factors are the increasing steel consumption especially in the fast growing markets in Asia and China. Between 2000 and 2007 increased the worldwide steel consumption by 60 %. On the other side we have an oligopoly of only three dominant mining companies on the world market. Those mining companies have problems too keep up their production volume with the rising steel consumption. This gap between consumption and production volume is hard to fill and it will take time to expand the mining capacities and to find new exploration areas. – At additional costs. Seen overall those factors have a direct impact on the steel prices worldwide. Depending on consumption and production volumes are differences in certain areas to be seen: the steel prices in Europe rised in one year by 52 %, in Asia by 83 % and in the USA by 84 % (source: CRU figures, dated 08.08.2008). According to industry experts is the price for steel rising, as long as prices for raw materials and energy are not decreasing. |
Rising raw-material and energy costs have enormous impact on the actual steel prices. Due to rising consumption is the steel production on it’s limit. Estimation for Germanys production in 2008 is about 48.5 m tons. |
